Photoshoot 11 (9th March 2015)

After last weeks shoot with Rosie we were now rescheduling the day we lost due to model illness. As mentioned in my previous post about Shoot 9, we were able to prove to the photographer that one makeup artist would suffice the brief, therefore Natalie has been able to stay at home for this shoot whilst I complete the hair and makeup briefs.
I am working on the senses of Touch and also Smell. Rosie is clear on the vision for these two senses and has sent a small selection of inspiration for the hair and makeup (See below). It will be important for me to keep continuity with Natalies makeup applications for last week, which is something I was looking forward to doing to develop my skills in this.

The shoot went a lot better than on Thursday. Myself, the photographer and stylist all had a much clearer idea of what we were doing. I was able to utilise my hour to complete the hair and make-up, initially using crimpers to style the hair, before adding a more dramatic wave to the hair with beach wavers. This gave a good texture to the hair for the look 'touch'. The photographer was very happy with this and along with the styling photographed very well. The photographer was also kind enough to shoot a beauty image for myself closer to the face which I look forward to receiving. The second look smell also worked well. I decided to take my model to the studios and wash her hair in the basin. This enabled me to get the existing heat styling and product out of her hair. Then using gel spray along with styling gel I created the side parting desired with the slicked back style of the hair. Below are some behind the scenes images I took on the day;

Photoshoot 12 (11th March AM)

The final shoot in Kate's collection, who myself and Natalie are working together with, is being shot in the morning of Wednesday 11th March. We will be working with the model below;

As this is the final shoot in the series, I wanted to be available so I could at least feature one of each of the images in my portfolio as a collection. However I knew I was not available the whole day of the 11th due to working on a shoot with photographer Rachael Cameron, to reshoot some of our images from our girl next door series. This however has not become an issue due to Kate only being able to book the studio for a short time in the morning due to high demand for them at present.

I will be working throughout the morning to complete two looks before leaving early to meet the second photographer for shoot 13.
There was no initial inspiration for this shoot or designated looks so this made it easy for us to consult the mood boards already made by Kate and work with ideas to fit with the style of the other images.

I arrived at 9:20am, on the morning to meet the photographer and attain a key to the studio. We had completed set up at 10am, and were actually expecting the model at 9:45am. We had not heard from him and were unable to contact him, therefore Kate contacted a friend of the models to ask where he was. He had overslept, which obviously had set back the day already. He eventually arrived at 10:50am, which had restricted the shoot time to one hour. I was able to complete the makeup within 15 minutes, whilst Natalie completed the hair. This made sure we had saved time to get the images we needed from the shoot. The makeup then progressed as before hand to become more messy, with black grease paint and blood being applied across the torso this time, in exchange for a lack of styling. Unfortunately after this I had to leave the shoot with Natalie and Kate, as I was attending the second shoot of the day, which I had agreed to prior to this shoot. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures behind the scenes of this shoot, due to it being as fast paced as the other two shoots we have took part in for Kate.

Photoshoot 13 (11th March PM)

The 13th shoot I am partaking in is on the afternoon of the 11th of March after Kates shoot taking place that morning.

Rachaels shoot is a reshoot of 'the girl next door' themed shoot which took place on the 19th Feb (Photoshoot 4). The images from the studio were not suitable for the outdoors style of the rest of the shoot therefore we are reshooting 3 different outdoors looks, which will match the rest. Continuity again was important, with the contouring being specifically important, as it was heavy on the day. Also the state of Roxy's (model)hair will be important to consider as it was very natural on the day.

When Roxy arrived at 12:30pm with myself, I was pleased to see her hair was in the natural state as it was last time. This meant I only had to backcomb the hair in the same way as last time. I also wanted to keep continuity with the makeup, therefore applied the same base as before, as well as the intensity of the contour and highlight application. I was able to do this easily, as Roxys skin tone was very olive, which was similar to shade 240 of my colour stay foundations, and the only appropriate shade for her skin. This again was applicable to the contour, which my palette provides an olive contour appropriate for the models skin tone.

Using the same lip colour and eyeshadow shades as before I was able to create the look symmetrical to the shoot beforehand. The photographer and model were both happy with this, and we were able to commence the shoot. The shoot was expected to take three hours, which was the maximum time our model had available for re shooting, however we managed to complete all three looks within an hour and a half, which was excellent. Photoshoot 14 - 18th March PM

The final shoot within the senses collaboration with Rosie Wood took place on Wednesday March 18th, and featured the sense of 'Taste'. This was the hardest sense to source for, therefore took the team a little longer hence the space between shoots. The styling featured a citrus green dress, and a perspex lemon clutch bag which cost the photographer £800!!!

 As discussed with rosie prior to shooting, she wanted straight hair, with a slight wave at the bottom, almost flicked, with natural makeup to match the rest of the collection, alongside a glossy lip. As the styling was so bold for this look, I felt that having simplistic hair will match the rest of the images, and will benefit the look as a whole even if it does not benefit my own portfolio as an individual image.

The makeup and hair took approximately 30 minutes to complete. As I had built a good connection with my model over the past 3 weeks, we knew the processes I underwent and order of hair and makeup application, making it easy for us and also the rest of the team. An issue that did arise and set us back was that the steamer left on by the stylist was over filled and overheated causing it to spill across the floor and cause an immediate health and safety hazard with electrics and water mixing. I turned off the machine before anything further could happen and the stylist was then able to rectify the issue by emptying the steamer.
During touch ups within shooting time I was using hairspray which at one point was able to land in a 'mist' form onto the perspex clutch bag (which as mentioned cost £800). I was very concerned about this, primarily due to price, however myself and the photography assistant were able to use a sunglasses wipe to buff these tiny marks away. This is something I should be more aware of in the future as in industry could of been more costly, and could of potentially lost a job for myself.

Now the 'senses' collaboration with Rosie and Natalie is completed I look forward to receiving the final images, however I am very pleased to have been a part of the series, which I believe will benefit my photographic portfolio.

Photoshoot 15 - 3/4/15

On march 28th a photographer I have collaborated with in the past contacted myself to ask wether I would be available to assist on her photoshoot over the easter holidays. Although I was reluctant to give up time on my own project, I was able to help as the photoshoot was on a location in tropical greenhouses with bold makeup and wet look hair, which is something I felt would help to break up the recent studio images I have worked on. Travel was also paid for, which was a bonus for myself.

Above is the moodboard provided. Although it is brief I was able to work to it, and on the day discussed it with Mica. We discarded the idea of bold linear eyeliner as seen in the bottom right image, however worked more to a smokey makeup such as the image on the top left, with a deep plum lip. I made this my own by using dark greys and browns around the eyes incorporating a black smokey eye around the corners, with a defined black liner on top of the lashes. This was matched with a deep contour around the face, as well as a deep plum lip colour applied. The hair was worked around the image on the top right side, which used freeze spray and back combing to bring in shape, and texture, with it providing a wet look.

The photoshoot took place in a large plant nursery site, which involved some walking and also health and safety risks. Mica had completed a health and safety form for this but was constantly checking we were keeping to the regulations when working on slippery surfaces in large greenhouses on site, which was good reassurance.

As you can see from the images above the environment we were working in was quite unique, and as the sun came out the greenhouses heated more making it a challenge to keep the hair and makeup in place. The image above shows the makeup after travelling, where the smokey eye has bled down under the eyes, and also the lip colour has faded from the lips. This was rectified prior to shooting with a lighter plum lip colour rather than deep purple, and also a gloss to echo the wet look of the hair. Concealer was applied under the eyes where unwanted eyeshadow was dusted off with brushes, and another darker black smoke was applied to the areas where the product needed to be.

Overall I am happy with the outcome of the makeup, the hairstyling request was not particularly adventurous, therefore did not allow me to show as much skill as I would have liked to, but never the less will be images hopefully that will compliment my portfolio

Girl Next Door - Final Edited Images

Below are the images from Rachael Camerons Girl Next Door shoot, which took place over a day with a reshoot following behind within an afternoon. Below are the 8 images chosen for her final hand in. I am happy with the selection of images, in both black and white and colour, and will now need to decide which 2-3 images will work best within my own portfolio.

5 senses - contact sheets and behind scenes images

After completing the final day of Rosie's shoot, she was able to send some images across from her assistant of the production of the shoot. Below are the two of my makeup application, and hair fixing both on different days. These images are useful when it comes to personalising the website and give a professional finish. It is a shame my hair was not as tidy as I would have liked it to be on the first image, however the models hair was which is what matters and what people will be looking at.

We were also able to get some contact sheets off Rosie, which is a luxury, as it allows myself and Natalie to see the selection of images taken from each day, prior to receiving the final images. Below are the three contact sheets regarding the photoshoots I partook in.

'Touch' is the shoot I believe was the most beneficial to showcasing my skills and enhancing my portfolio. The fact that the image is also panned close to the face, focusing on the hair styling will also be beneficial, more so than the others potentially.

 'Touch' again with a different outfit was not as close to the face, and the hair almost disappeared into the backdrop, however I have been notified these images will not be featured in the final selection, therefore it is something I do not need to be concerned about.

 'Smell' was shot horizontally at first to feature as a double page spread, this will result in my work being focused on, one side of the shot, however the focus for this was on the shoes which smelt of bubblegum, therefore the cameras focus may detract away from the hair and makeup side of the image.

 'Taste' was the sense which was hardest to style, and was shot last. This did not require a lot of advanced hair or makeup styling due to the nature and colour of the garments, therefore is an image that will not showcase my skills however will work to complete a set of images which I have worked very hard on over the last 4 weeks.

Final Portfolio Images - why they are chosen?

As discussed I wanted to include a selection of images from theatre. This is to make my portfolio more diverse and myself a more employable artist. The images from seasons greetings above and below showcase the work which I supervised and designed last year. Although this work is not recent, I feel comfortable discussing this work confidently, the processes of knotting a moustache for the character seen in the right, through to diverse changes within the female character below.

Again as discussed theatre is something I do want to include as a small section within my portfolio. These images from persuasion showcase again supervision for the mens department. The production was period based and this is something which I feel lacks in my portfolio therefore using historic costume and hair showcases my ability to fulfil briefs to this description.

As discussed throughout this unit log, I have focused on building and selecting images appropriate to a fashion/wig portfolio brief. The following images are the result of this years collaborations and fulfil that.

 The images to the left and right are unique in the way of colour and heavier application of glitter makeups. They stand out from the rest of the portfolio however this is a positive as it shows my diversity as an artist and my ability to use materials to create alternate beauty makeups.

The 'girl next door' shoot which took place early on within the year had 10 different looks. Although I often will only try to include three as a maximum amount of images from each shoot in this case I have chosen 4. This is because some were colour and some were black and white, and I felt my ability to showcase a pair of each tone would give an idea of my makeup application skills within a coloured or b+w shoot. I appreciate the hair and makeup within this

 shoot is not as complex as some of my other shoots, however often for catalogue shoots etc this would be the case therefore this adds to making my portfolio more diverse and appropriate to industry.









Following the black and white theme, the next two images I have used are from the shoot 'Girl Boy'. Although these images are quite different from the rest of my portfolio and potentially more 'aggressive' they also show my ability to apply alternate makeups for edgy fashion shoots, and also work with male models. Where these are placed in my portfolio will be important so they do not clash with images before and after them.






This pair of images from the 'Lolita' shoot, work relatively will with the images above, with a more sultry female model, again taking away from some of the innocence of the rest of the images within my portfolio.  The filter on the images really highlights my makeup application, and also shows collaboration ability working with a hair stylist.

The pair of images from micas greenhouse shoot are again black and white with a unique border. These also work well with the previous two pairs due to the filters as well as the harsh makeup, alternating from my natural makeup seen in the portfolio. The hair is something which could have been improved however a hairdresser styled this and therefore is credited rather than myself.

One of the most successful shoots from the year is the 'senses' shoot which took place with Rosie wood. These images were very high fashion based and also revolved around clothing items, with the makeup required to compliment the clothing, and continuity in the makeup required throughout. The hair was quite versatile in change, with beach wavers used for texture, before slick shiny hair being required. This excersises slightly more hair skill than some other portfolio images and are some I am very proud of.

Another set of images included within my portfolio submission are from a costume shoot which took place in early march. I undertook this shoot primarily to show my ability to work on alternate skin tones. This again shows diversity in my application, and also my ability to place colour on the face. I am not overly happy with the finish on the images, and believe they are quite weak, however I feel it is important they are included.

Images from my own personal projects within other units are also included within my portfolio, as these are stronger images and more complex in hair and makeup styling with contextual backup. I try to include these towards the beginning and end of the portfolio as I believe starting and ending with memorable images is important. These images are obviously some I am very proud of and have a lot to discuss therefore where they are placed in my portfolio is important.
